Personally, I found my first weekend getaway in Cork to be a little bit overwhelming – with so much going on it was a struggle deciding where to go first – so it’s worth having a basic idea of what you want to do before you get there.

Take in fascinating architecture

The city is awash with historic buildings, and if you book car hire in Cork you’ll be able to travel from the various monuments with ease. Of course, which one you visit first is up to you, but I recommend starting with the Cork City Gaol.

Built in the 19th century, this is considered to be one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in the region and, by heading inside, you’ll discover what life in the jail was like for prisoners (you can even see the graffiti that they left on the walls!) and check out lifelike wax models.

Taking a tour of the historic St Fin Barre Cathedral should also not be missed. Although the structure you see today was constructed in the 19th century, the site it is built on was used as a place of worship for more than 1,000 years before that.
